Signs & Symptoms of ADHD

Inattentiveness and hyperactivity and impulsiveness are two types of behavioural difficulties associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most individuals with ADHD have symptoms in both areas, however, this is not always the case. Some people with the condition, for example, may struggle with inattentiveness but not hyperactivity or impulsivity. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is another name for this type of ADHD. Because the symptoms of ADD aren't always visible, it can go unnoticed.

Inattentiveness:

The most common indications of inattention are:

  • Being easily distracted and having a limited attention span
  • Making careless errors (such as in homework)
  • Appearing to be forgetful or misplacing items
  • Being unable to stick to tedious or time-consuming tasks
  • Displaying an inability to listen to or follow directions
  • Difficulty with activities or tasks that are constantly changing
  • Having trouble with organising tasks

Hyperactivity and Impulsiveness:

The main indicators of impulsivity and hyperactivity are:

  • Being unable to sit still, particularly in a calm or quiet environment
  • Fidgeting all the time
  • Being unable to focus on a task
  • Physical activity that is excessive
  • Chatting excessively
  • Unable to wait your turn
  • Behaving without thinking
  • Causing disruptions to discussions
  • There is little to no sense of danger
